Here Is Information On Mississippi Orthodontics

By David Phillips

Dental medicine is a medical profession responsible for maintaining proper dental health in people. Dentistry is a field which has a broad coverage and has various sub-specialties under it. Each sub-category covers a specific area of the wellbeing of teeth. As such, orthodontics is a field under dentistry that involves jaw and teeth alignment. Here are facts regarding Mississippi orthodontics.

Doctors who specialize in the field of orthodontics are referred to as orthodontists. They work to correct jaws and teeth that are improperly positioned in the mouth. It is important that all teeth in the mouth be properly aligned so as to make the cleaning process easier and more efficient. When the teeth are not properly aligned, it is harder to clean them well.

Improperly cleaned teeth are often at a higher risk of developing dental diseases, and are therefore susceptible to being lost early. Once diseases such as periodontal disease and tooth decay have set in, it is much harder to clean the mouth and chewing becomes a problem. Chewing with such teeth often places a lot of stress on various muscles in the neck and head area, which may cause headaches, back pain, neck aches, shoulder pain, and TMJ syndrome.

When the teeth in the mouth are improperly aligned, their aesthetic appeal is adversely affected. When someone has crooked teeth, they normally tend to hide them when laughing or smiling since they are not so confident about exposing them. This greatly affects self-esteem of a person. Lack of self-esteem obviously affects someone in their life in multiple ways.

Orthodontists use a wide range of removable and fixed appliances to correct misalignment in teeth and jaws. These appliances are used for a wide range of functions such as retraining muscles, moving teeth, and affecting the growth of the jaws. The mechanism in which these appliances work involves placing gentle pressure on the jaws and teeth that are affected until they are properly aligned.

Different appliances come with different capabilities of correcting dental misalignment. Thus, the severity of the condition one suffers from determines the type of dental appliance that the dental practitioner will use. If necessary, several appliances and approaches can be used in solving some conditions at the same time. Each appliance and approach is used at different levels of the treatment procedure.

A person who is interested in becoming an orthodontist should know very well that the decision is a big one. The training process itself can take over ten years from the moment an individual finishes high school. One is required to earn a bachelor degree which takes four years and later proceed to earn a second degree in a medical school. This takes another four years.

Another three years are to be spent in orthodontic residency. Once residency is complete, one must pursue licensure, which involves passing a written exam administered by the American Board of Orthodontics. One may pursue board certification if they like in future or immediately after being licensed. How much experience one has in the field usually determines the amount of money they earn as a salary in a month.
