The Best Orthopedic Surgeons In Houston TX

By Leslie Ball

The medical specialty that treats patients who have joint, bone and muscle problems is called orthopedics. Houston, TX 77030 is a city that loves its sports. Sports means injuries and lots of them, making a huge demand on the best orthopedic surgeons in Houston. Consequently, residents in the city have no shortage of physicians to look after their degenerative conditions, tumors, fractures, infections and congenital disorders.

Although not the capital city of Texas, Houston is the most populous city in the state. The city goes by the official nickname, "Space City, " owing to the presence of NASA's Johnson Space Center, where the Mission Control Center is located. The city is second only to New York City with regard to the number of Fortune 500 companies located there.

Houston is also the most diverse major metropolitan area in terms of culture, more so than in Texas and in the United States as a whole. Tourists have at their disposal numerous institutions and cultural exhibits all located within the Museum District. Together, these attractions bring in more than 7 million visitors each year.

Space City loves its sports and has an impressive roster of players. The Texans filled the void left when the Oilers left town to form the Tennessee Titans in the NFL. The Astros represent the city in major league baseball. The Rockets have been the local major league NBA basketball team since 1971. The Dynamo have occupied a soccer franchise since 2006 and the Dash play in the women's national soccer league.

With so many national sports teams on their doorstep, it is hardly surprising that the population as a whole have a high proportion of sports injuries that fall within the remit of the orthopedic surgeon, not to mention osteopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists. It is probably the baseball players who keep the ancillary practitioners busy, with their retinue of muscle pulls, bruises, sprains and ligament injuries.

Basketball players, on the other hand, tend to hurt their lower extremities, with half of them visiting the doctor for injuries to the foot and ankle. This is reasonable, when you consider their work consists mainly of stopping hard on a dime and pivoting rapidly in a different direction. More than 10 percent of injuries are to the hip and thigh, with barely 10 percent involving the knee. Like baseball, the most common injuries in basketball are sprains.

Like their friends on the basketball courts, soccer players tend to injure themselves below the waist, with the most common injuries involving the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Soft tissue injuries to the ankle and foot are also common, again, similar to basketball players. The muscles at the back of the thigh, the hamstrings, are frequently injured by sudden moves and sprinting.

It's really funny that the worst injuries are suffered by the population that wears the best protection, and that is football. Quarterbacks typically injure their knees. Other common injuries are concussions and other head injuries, as well as injuries to the neck and shoulders. These guys get paid a lot of money, and so they need the best in medical care to get them back on the field as soon as possible.
