When To Undergo Hernia Repair Surgery

By Michelle Nelson

It is no walk in the park when it comes to dealing with pain, especially when the source of it is not known. When discomfort comes from the groin area with noticeable swelling, it may be a sign that something has gone awry. Bulges or lumps in the abdominal area may suggest that hernia repair surgery is definitely needed.

One may ask how to identify hernias. It is simply a bulge of body tissue or even an organ through a structure that is responsible for containing it. There is an opening in the structure of the muscle wall in the stomach when there is an abdominal hernia. The lining of the abdominal cavity extends beyond the opening which results in bulging. Activities that increase the pressure of the abdominal may do more damage.

When someone has a hernia, it is usually repaired through surgery. There is more than one method that can aid in fixing different types of hernias. One approach called the surgical approach, is used after anesthesia and sterilization of the area in which to have surgery. An incision is made in the location of the hernia and leads down to the tissue layers in hopes of separating normal tissue from hole margins. Through the use of a suture and plastic mesh, the hole is closed.

Repairs through the use of a suture are designed to pull the edges of the defected area together. It can be compared to sewing up a hole in a garment. However, there are complications such as putting a strain on nearby tissues. This can lead to the tearing of these tissues which can help in forming another hernia. An alternate technique was later developed which sutures the weak area together by using mesh that is very much like plastic. The material is permanent and when used to sew the defective margins together, it gives room for the body to complete its natural healing process.

After performing the repair, the underlying tissues are then mended with sutures that are absorbable. Repairs that are secure in nature are usually performed using a laparoscopic technique. It aids in repairing because it is less stressful.

Impaired activity and pain warrants the need for hernia repair. One can almost guarantee that emergency surgery will be for those who refuse to have treatment. Some may want to try a temporary solution by wearing a device that pushes in body tissue through the use of external compression. The mechanism is known as a truss. It again is a temporary solution for what could be a permanent situation.

Hernias simply can not be controlled. It may have contributing factors that have been passed along. Sometimes it can grow right along with an individual. The arrangement of the local tissues is very important. As tissue thickens, it may increase the risk of developing another hernia. Factors that may also result in an increased risk would be smoking, not lifting properly, and by not using the right type of abdominal support.

Anytime a hernia causes pain or impairs activity it needs to be repaired. Those that go without any type of treatment may result in emergency surgery in the future. Individuals may temporarily control their pain may wear a contraption that pushes the tissues in by applying external compression. It is called a truss, and it must be applied daily. Again this is a temporary fix and does provide a permanent solution to the problem.
