A Few Notes On Laser Treatment For Pain And Inflammation

By Gregory Martin

Pain and inflammation are two common symptoms that can be quite a bother for the patient if they are not adequately controlled. The two come about as a result of trauma or certain chronic disease conditions such as arthritis. Any system in the body can be affected due to one reason or the other. Inflammation in the stomach lining is referred to as gastritis. When cardiac muscle gets inflamed, the condition is referred to as carditis. Laser treatment for pain and inflammation is quite useful in situations where symptoms are persistent, despite basic measures for managing pain.

The mechanism of action in this therapy is said to involve photons reacting with cells in the human body. The light energy is focused on the inflamed area to maximize on the reaction and its end result. Affected tissues take in the energy and use it in a metabolic process necessary to bring about relief of symptoms. This whole process is scientifically referred to as photobiomodulation.

Compared to analgesic drugs, this treatment is better because one does not have to struggle with taking the medicine periodically, not to mention the unpleasant taste, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting associated with some drugs. It is not easy for one to comply with their medication because not only do they get reminded of their suffering each time, the drugs take some time for their effect to be seen.

The treatment is quite fast and effective. It keeps the patient quite relaxed and for a moment, they forget about all the worries that come with life. Therefore, compliance to treatment is not an issue in this case because of the instant soothing the procedure provides. Moreover, it only requires five to ten minutes of their time and then they can go about their daily responsibilities. It is also an advantage for the healthcare team because they get to cover more ground within a short period of time.

Depending on severity and acuteness of the condition, a couple of sessions may be required to achieve sustained symptomatic relief. For acute pain and inflammation secondary to physical injury, the earlier the treatment is started the better. Outcomes are better with faster response because then inflammation will not have time to build up. For those tissues that are severely inflamed, higher energies may be required to provide adequate relief.

It is important to start treatment as soon as possible to increase the chances of rapid healing, in instances where tissues get inflamed as a result of physical injury. More than that, the amount of energy emitted from the source determines the adequacy of therapy. For the very severe forms of disease, greater energy quantities may be needed.

It should be noted that laser therapy is contraindicated in conditions where there is active bleeding. Applying laser treatment in such cases only serves to worsen the condition. The bleeding needs to be addressed first before inflammation can be taken care of using the light rays.

In conclusion, pain and inflammation can be managed in various ways, depending on cause, severity and how chronic it is. Laser is among the recent approaches that provide rapid and long lasting relief. Affordability is one of the key points to consider when choosing laser as the dominant form of pain management.
