It is common practice for homeowners to store drugs in their homes. Common drugs found in shelves are meant for young kids who fall ill at night or for people who have recurrent infections or diseases. Although these drugs are a necessity, their date of expiry should be observed now and then. Consumption of expired drugs agitates the infection making it worse and can cause deaths. Therefore, ensure your home has no such medicine at all times since you can never tell when a child will take them without your notice.

Once some medicines have been prescribed for you, you are supposed to keep them where not every person can tamper with them. However, after recovery, the remainder should be disposed of immediately. Most people throw the medicines in a dustbin awaiting its fullness before they can burn them. Keep in them closed containers and send them to the main collection bin at the roadside.

A prescribed medicine is issued with details of the user and directions on how it should be taken. For safety measures and clearance of your name from foreigners who might come in touch with the containers after its disposal, scrap off your details. This will prevent your identity from being stolen. As such, rip off labels used or scratch them out.

Regions where take-back community programs are available, you should not go through hardships in eradicating expired drugs. Take them to these groups, and they will be glad to get rid of them for you. However, if this not available, request the government institutions responsible for drug disposal to assist you on the way forward.

Some medicine appearance might scare the hell out of you when you think of burning them down as a way of disposing of them. In such cases, it is important that you invite the assistance of drug enforcement agency. This body has a collection mechanism whereby they visit hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and drug stores collecting unwanted drugs. They can ask you to drop it at these facilities or mail it to them for safe disposal.

People prefer flushing down their unused medicines in toilets. Although it is the simplest way they can do it, it has its effects on the environment. Residues from sewerage systems may contaminate rivers and other water bodies that hamper as breeding and feeding grounds for birds, animals, and other creatures that depend on them.

Check expiry dates of medicine in your home often. Repeat the exercise every three months to ensure no single dose that has expired is left in the cabinets. Use the legalized means in disposing of them and maintain a healthy and a stress-free family where kids can roam in the house without fear of coming into contact with hazardous drugs.
