Why An Omaha Walk In Clinic Could Be A Better Option Than An Emergency Room

By Paul Wagner

When you aren't feeling well, you have to decide whether or not you are so sick you should call an ambulance, get in the car and drive to the emergency room, or wait until morning to make an appointment with your primary physician. Sometimes none of these options seem applicable, and when that is the case in Nebraska, you might consider going to an Omaha walk in clinic.

Emergency rooms are critical places for those who are experiencing life threatening situations. The staff is prepared to deal with accident, heart attack, fire, and overdose victims. If you find yourself in the emergency room waiting area because you have a fever or sore throat, you might have a long wait until someone can see you. At a walk in facility you can see a practitioner quickly, and you won't be taking a specialist away from someone more in need.

Being treated by specialized hospital staff is expensive. Routine tests and exams can cost more than a thousand dollars. If you call an ambulance, you can expect to receive a bill that may be in the hundreds of dollars. Urgent care, by contrast, is much less expensive. These facilities are small and most are run efficiently. They don't have the overhead issues that face hospitals.

Another advantage you will find when you decide to go to a walk in facility is the convenience. These units are located in more and more pharmacies, malls, and big box stores. They may not be open twenty-four hours a day in some areas, but they do have extended evening hours. The parking is usually easier and the waiting time is negligible.

Since these kinds of facilities are geared toward non-critical health issues, they are usually a more efficient choice than emergency rooms. Hospitals are set up to handle more complicated and life threatening situations. It may take longer, and require more paperwork, to get the same care in the emergency room than it would if you had walked into a clinic.

Hospitals are notorious for the amount of paperwork they require of patients. You may have to sign numerous forms and fill out releases for a minor health issue. It is not unusual for patients to have to go to multiple windows and answer the same questions in order to be released. Walk in clinics do not require large amounts of paperwork because they are less complex operations.

Another convenience you will find by opting for urgent care is that your prescriptions can be filled at the clinic or pharmacy where you were treated. You don't have to go someplace else to get your medication, which can be a real convenience if you are not feeling well. Of course you can choose to use your regular pharmacy, but at least you have the option.

Everybody gets sick occasionally. Unless you have an emergency, choosing an urgent care facility is probably the most appropriate choice. It will be quicker, cheaper, and more efficient, and you will get qualified and reliable care.
