The Benefits Of Ceramic Reconstruction

By Laura Williams

Invented back in the 80s and further developed in the last decade, this innovative new technology is getting more popular lately. Ceramic reconstruction makes it easier to regain your beautiful smile. Thanks to this innovative technology, the whole process of dental restoration in Howell, MI takes significantly less time and fewer dental visits, the procedure itself is less invasive and less uncomfortable, and the results are beautiful, high-quality, translucent and natural looking, long lasting teeth.

This whole procedure is known as CEREC, or Chair-side Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic. Using CAD/CAM method, your dentist can design your new tooth with perfect precision, with the little help of computers and advanced technology, and both design and manufacturing process are computer guided and performed.

Computer Assisted Design starts with scanning the tooth and surrounding area using intraoral camera, to be able to provide one or several 3D scans, needed for designing a new tooth. All these images are used during Computer Assisted Manufacturing, and the whole process is guided and supervised by your dentist. CAM uses 3D printer or CNC milling device for printing or shaping the restoration, using high quality ceramic materials.

Intraoral camera creates a virtual model not only of your missing tooth, but also the antagonist tooth and the bite situation. This virtual model helps in constructing the restoration. Finally, the model is milled out of a color-matching ceramic block, using diamond coated units, or printed in the 3D printer, using the appropriate type of ceramic material made for this purpose.

High quality ceramics used for this purpose can be divided into two main categories. The first one, silicate ceramics, is mostly used for reconstructing parts of the teeth or a missing tooth. It is available in numerous nuances, it looks attractive, translucent and natural. The other type, so called lithium disilicate ceramics, has higher flexural strength, and is more appropriate for different bridge frameworks, although it can be used for restoration as well.

The whole process of taking digital impressions is something entirely different than the old fashion impression taking was. It takes very short time, it is easy and comfortable, and allows really precise designing. Some dentists have all needed technology, and some will have to send the data to a printer or a milling device located elsewhere. In any case, this won't require much time.

CEREC created restoration lasts around ten years or so, and often much longer, according to some studies. Gold and other reconstructive materials used before cannot provide such a durability, or longevity, and they cannot look so naturally, either. Of course, you still have to take care of your teeth, and this will also contribute to their looks and longevity.

There are numerous benefits this method provides. Taking digital impression is much more comfortable and takes less time. This method also provides higher accuracy, perfectly matched color, longevity and durability. The process is much simpler, it doesn't take so much time and effort, and results are incomparably better. Not to mention the fact that everything can be completed in only one visit to your dentist.
