With Help From An Emergency Dentist Marion NC Residents Can Get Rid Of Pain

By Peter Brooks

There cannot be many types of pain quite as excruciating as dental pain. A severe toothache, or an abscess in the mouth can be painful to the point where the sufferer can think of nothing else. He cannot sleep, work or eat. Strong painkillers may provide a little bit of relief but it is not a solution for more than a few hours. There is only one solution and without an emergency dentist Marion NC patients will simply have to suffer until they can see a dental practitioner during office hours.

There has been some controversy about what exactly constitute a dental emergency. In the medical field, an emergency is a situation where the patient is in grave danger of developing harmful side effects or even of dying. Dental emergencies are not always life threatening or even dangerous but, even so, dentists routinely treat patients for perceived emergencies because they know that severe pain can be debilitating.

In many cases patients that call upon dental practitioners to treat them as urgent cases do not even experience pain. They may have lost one or more teeth, broken a crown or damaged their dentures. In such cases the emergencies that they declare is purely attributable to cosmetic concerns. Many dental practitioners accept such cases as emergencies, however. They understand that their patients are often embarrassed to appear in public with damaged teeth.

Sadly, far too many patients experience emergencies because they failed to act on time. So many people experience discomfort but fail to see a dental practitioner because they think the problem will go away. It will not. Once the problem has escalated to an emergency and the patient experiences severe pain, the problem is much more serious and requires much more drastic interventions.

Many dentists are willing to respond to dental emergencies, but patients will have to understand that such treatment can be costly. In many instances the practitioner has to call out an assistant, open up the practice and incur expenses in the process. The patient will have to pay for those additional expenses. Medical insurance often refuse to pay for such treatment, especially if it was for mostly cosmetic reasons.

Dental treatment experts agree that the vast majority of dental emergencies can be avoided. Far too many people do not practice proper dental hygiene, brushing and flossing regularly and paying close attention to the condition of their gums and tongues. It is also vital to visit a dental practice at least twice a year, even if no specific problems are experienced. The earlier potential problems can be detected and treated, the less the chance for an emergency to develop.

Of course their are cases where emergencies could not have been foreseen. People have accidents. They lose teeth in falls and car crashes, they accidentally bite on something hard and lose a tooth and they suffer trauma to the mouth. In such cases it is certainly important to seek emergency help immediately. Trauma to the mouth can easily lead to a host of other health problems.

Dental pain can indeed be very intense. Far too many people try to alleviate their pain by taking massive doses of drugs. This is the worst course of action. The drugs will only help for a short while and big doses of opiates can cause big damage elsewhere in the body. The only solution is to seek help.
