When Is A North Carolina Internal Medicine Practitioner The Best Choice

By Michael Hayes

Many professionals choose to specialize in certain fields of practice rather than offering general services to their clients. This is true of lawyers, accountants, Realtors, dentists, and doctors. You may have to hire one accountant to do your taxes and another to handle your monthly accounts. There are residential and commercial Realtors. Orthodontists put braces on children, and periodontists evaluate gum disease. There are many specialties in the medical professional, and more seem to spring up every day. On the east coast, an adult North Carolina internal medicine practitioner sees patients with all kinds of ailments and concerns.

A lot of internists do not see children, but concentrate on the health problems that affect adults. Heart related diseases are extremely common, and many doctors have patients that suffer a variety of cardiovascular problems. They may have irregular or rapid heart rates, have had heart attacks in the past, or have enlarged hearts. Physicians prescribe appropriate medications and do periodic testing to gauge the condition of these patients.

Lung and other respiratory diseases are common occurrences in patients that are currently smoking or have a history with tobacco. They may find it difficult to do simple tasks and don't have the breath to exercise regularly. Most physicians strongly urge these patients to quit this destructive habit in any way possible. They may prescribe patches for them or give them recommendations for over the counter products.

When they have patients come into their offices complaining of tiredness, excessive hunger and thirst combined with weight loss, or frequent urination they will test for diabetes. This is one of the most common diseases affecting today's society, and it has varying degrees of severity. Depending on the test results, doctors may recommend specific medications and blood monitoring. They are also aware of the importance of diet and exercise when it comes to managing this disease successfully.

Diabetes may be the most common endocrine related disease that internists encounter, but there are patients who come in with adrenal and thyroid gland problems. There are others who suffer with pancreatitis. Regular exercise and maintaining a healthy diet helps to relieve the stress and tension that often make these ailments worse. Internists can work with patients who have moderate problems, but will refer the more severe cases to an endocrinologist.

A lot on internists work with older patients who suffer from a variety of neurological conditions such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, and strokes. These are debilitating diseases with no known cures. There are new medicines on the market that internists are aware of to combat the signs and symptoms however. In addition to treatment, many of these patients need empathy and understanding from their medical practitioner.

There are a variety of digestive, kidney, and joint ailments that internists see on a daily basis. Most of the cases can be remedied or controlled with a combination of medication, diet, and exercise. Arthritis is commonly treated by internists as are kidney stones, ulcers, and acid reflux.

Medical internists play an important role in the health of many. They should be valued as serious professionals.
