How To Conduct Effective Clinical Research Management

By Sarah Reynolds

Clinical research is a sector of health care study that deals with the efficacy and safety of treatment regimens, medication devices and diagnostic products envisioned for human use. These elements could be used for diagnosis, prevention, treatment or dismissing disease symptoms. Clinical trials are used to collect evidence which is then used to establish new and improved treatment procedures. Due to the compound nature of this branch, clinical research management must be undertaken to ensure optimal use of the available resources.

People take part in this activity for various reasons. Many healthy volunteers participate for the desire to contribute to the medical advancement and for the love of helping others. Volunteers with health complications take part with hopes of receiving new and improved treatments and also for the desire to assist others. These people also benefit from the additional attention and care offered by the researchers and trial crew. These trials provide hope for many individuals suffering from chronic conditions and an opportunity for finding better medical procedures for other future cases. As to safeguard the health of participants, these trials are highly protocol oriented.

These measures include strict protocols to be followed during execution of different activities. Apart from that, an informed consent concept is used. This concept involves full disclosure of all information concerning the trial. A team is assigned the role of explaining this information to these volunteers so that they are acutely aware of the procedure, duration, potential benefits, risks and purposes. These people are also free to discontinue participation anytime they feel like it.

These research activities are sponsored by various individuals or companies, including medical institutions, pharmaceutical companies, physicians, voluntary groups and foundations. Federal agencies such as the Department of Veterans Affairs and National Institutes of Health also fund some of these endeavours.

Like any other project, medical study has several constraints. These come in the form of time, budget, objectives and scope. The desired results must be accomplished within a limited amount of resources and time. Therefore, management procedures must be undertaken to ensure that all resources are being optimised. Sound management practices guarantee success.

During such endeavours, project managers must undertake extensive planning. A project definition document should be used to carry out the work plan. Proper preparation promises reduced duration, costs and increased quality outcomes. Work scope and definitions are very crucial during the planning process. Project definition includes an overview, objectives, scope, risks and assumptions, approach and organisation.

Once the definitions are in place, management must also develop a planning horizon. This horizon is more like the work plan. It comprises of step by step directions for the task and constructing required deliverables. You can either design an action plan or use one from a similar job. Such work can be quite demanding.

Therefore, it is essential that the manager who is assigned such tasks has the necessary knowledge and experience. With the right expertise, overseeing project activities would be easy. A beginner, however, would have so much trouble keeping up with pace. This manager must also be humane, flexible and good with people.
