Steps For Treating Swollen Gums

There are many causes for swollen gums. Some of the most common causes are poor diet, hormones, medications, tooth misalignment, and oral diseases like periodontitis and chronic gingivitis. Plaque and tartar is also a common cause among some people. Plaque refers to a white substance deposited on gums and teeth, which when not removed become hard to form tartar. The plaque or tartar may be infected by bacteria to cause swelling of the gum. Catching the problem in its early stages is the key to treating swollen gums.

Swelling of gums has several risk factors. Some of them include smoking, hormonal changes in women, diabetes, genetic susceptibility, and medications. Smoking is the most significant of all the risk factors. Additionally, it lowers chances of successful treatment and recovery. Swelling that is caused by medications results because of reduced flow of saliva in the mouth, which promotes likelihood of infection.

It is not easy to notice inflammation of the gums It is common to have the problem and never notice it or get used to it that it is no longer a problem. Inflamed gum will always appear different from one that is not and knowing the difference between the two is key to noticing the problem. Either way, certain symptoms characterize the problem and can be noticed with ease.

When the gum becomes inflamed they change color. Typically, they become red, blue, dark pink, or purple. The papilla gets blunt or disappears while teeth margins roll. Some people feel severe pain or discomfort. When brushing teeth, some blood may appear in the mouth. Symptoms come at different rates or they may all flow in at once. Some symptoms may also skip and never appear.

The problem of swelling gum can be treated and reversed with ease without the help of a dentist. One needs to be dedicated, and maintain the right oral hygiene while eating a balanced diet. Eating a balanced diet and removing the harmful bacteria physically each day has been known to be able to reverse moderate and mild inflammation. A period of two weeks should be able to get the issue solved.

Brushing should be done using the correct toothbrush and must be done in the correct way. The toothbrush should have smooth bristles and should be held at 45 degrees towards the gum. Brushing should proceed gently often doing a tooth or two at a time. The tooth paste used should be recommended by a dentist. The process should be done twice a day.

More plaque is removed by electric toothbrushes, which makes them more effective. Scientific research has indicated that Blue Light Technology is also effective for treating inflammation inside the mouth. It achieves this by removing bacteria that cause gum pockets, bad breath, plaque, and gingivitis.

Flossing helps to clean under the gums to remove harmful bacteria. This can be achieved by floss picks, traditional floss, or water flossing. Swelling can never go away completely without cleaning beneath the gumlines. Flossing should be done once a day even if bleeding is experienced. Using topical rinses on toothbrushes is known to have direct effect on reducing inflammation and bacteria that cause it.
